What is Energy?

Everything in our Universe is made up of energy. Trees, rocks, books, beds, animals, and humans all have energy flowing through us.
Energy movements are called vibrations. You may have heard people around you talk about “vibes.” They are actually talking about vibrations or energy!
Some energy vibrates fast, like light energy. Think of how quickly you can see light once you switch on a light switch or light a candle. The energy of the light reaches your eyes very quickly.
Some energy vibrates slowly, like the energy that makes up solid objects like the ground, a chair, animals, or us. Our energy vibrates so slowly, we feel solid to the touch.
What’s special about energy is that no matter how quickly or slowly it moves, you can feel it. Some people can feel energy very easily without thinking about it or trying. Others may have to practice feeling energy, but once they try, they find they can feel it too.
This page is about those of us who can feel energy very easily. We can especially feel energy from other people, whether we are trying to or not. This can affect how we feel so we need to know how to take care of ourselves.
How Does Energy Affect Us?

Think about the last time you were out around a large group of people. Maybe you were at school or shopping in a big store. Did you go there feeling one way? How did you feel when you got there? Did you leave feeling the same or different from when you got there?
For people who are sensitive to energy, your feelings or emotions can change based on other people’s feelings just by being around them. We are sometimes called “empaths” or “sensitives.”
Some people can take on other people’s feelings and energy, which can affect their own moods. Think of the last happy time you were with your family or your friends. A time when everyone was in a good mood and enjoying each other’s company.
If you came to the event in a bad mood, you likely felt better after being with those people who were in a good mood. You picked up on their positive energy. If you were already in a good mood, their good mood made you feel even better. That is one of the great things about being sensitive to energy! We can be easily uplifted by positive energy from other people, animals, or by doing things that make us feel good.

Sensitive people can also pick up on people’s energy when they are in a bad mood. Have you ever gone to the store in a good mood, but once you’re there, you suddenly feel bad? You can pick up on the bad moods of other people in the store which affects your energy.
These bad moods are said to give off negative energy. You suddenly feel tired, angry, frustrated, and like you just want to get away from everyone. It can affect your mood while you’re around the negative energy and last for a couple of hours or the entire day.
Bad Moods
It’s important to remember that bad moods may make us feel bad, but they can also help us solve our daily problems. It is not a bad thing to express your feelings about a situation just because you have negative feelings. Our own bad feelings can help us identify places, people, and things that are harmful to us so we can protect ourselves.
While using our own bad feelings to help us is a good thing, feeling other people’s bad emotions can be a good or bad thing. It may be good to know that our brother is in a bad mood when he comes home from school. This is how we know to help him by showing compassion and support.
It is not a good thing, however, to let his bad mood change our good mood just because he is having bad feelings. It is normal and natural to have negative feelings and bad moods. The key is to know what to do with these feelings. The best way to use our skills as sensitives is to notice other people’s feelings without letting their feelings affect our own mood. We can do this by taking care of our own energy.
Changing Negativity Energy into Good Energy
We take care of our own energy by removing any negative energy we have picked up or created ourselves. There are a lot of ways to remove negative energy. The simplest way is to just say out loud or to yourself “My energy is protected. I reject negative energy that is not mine. I let go of negative energy that does not help me.” You can say this whenever you think you are picking up on someone else’s emotions or before you go into a crowded area.
The best way to keep our energy healthy and free of negative energy is meditation. Meditation can be done in many different ways. You can meditate by being still in your body. You can also meditate with movement like qigong, yoga, or walking mediation. Find whatever works best for your energy.

At the end of a school day or day out of your house, you may find you feel better after taking 20 to 30 minutes of quiet time to yourself before you do anything else. You will feel more energized if you give yourself some downtime before rushing off to soccer practice, starting homework, or getting in screentime.
Another good way to strengthen your energy field is to move your body. Dancing, playing sports, walking, and running all get the energy in your body moving in a healthy way.
Yoga, tai chi, and qigong are great exercises that specifically focus on keeping your energy healthy and strong. You can find these exercise videos on YouTube.
Protecting Your Energy
Some sensitives use objects to help protect their energy. You can use things like stones, feathers, jewelry (especially gemstones), a religious symbol or any object you associate with protection. It can even be an object from someone you think of as a protector for you.
What we want is for your body to take in negative energy, have you notice it, and have you let go of that negative energy quickly. Wearing these objects or having them on your body will help you go through this action more easily. Some objects can also help you attract good energy.
You can use aromatherapy to clear out the negative energy of the day. Aromas and smells can immediately lift our mood. Essential oils, candles, and anything that smells good to you can help.
Getting outside in nature is a great way to keep your energy healthy, grounded, and feeling connected to life.
Whether you go to the playground, hike, ride your bike, or play sports outside, nature is healing to your energy. Mother Earth can help take on any negative energy you have absorbed or created. She can help to strengthen your energy.

At the end of a long or stressful day, salt baths are a great way to remove feelings of negativity. The easiest way is to put some Epsom salt in your regular bathtub and soak in the tub until you feel better. Unload all of the negative feelings of the day and just relax.
You may have a furry family member in your house. Animals can help improve our moods as much as our human friends. We love them and they love us, which helps us feel connected and safe in the world.
Whether we are happy, excited, or sad, our animals sense our feelings and respond with the love we need and we can do the same for them.
If there is something, someone, or some place that always makes you feel bad, it is OK for you to not be around that thing, person, or place. It is normal to sometimes feel bad and sometimes feel good, but if you always feel bad around a person, place, or thing, that is not normal. Make sure you use your voice and express your emotions about these feelings to someone you love and trust.
Of course, our best source of support and love is our trusted family and friends. Talking about our feelings, sharing special moments, and just accepting their love and comfort can help heal our energy.

Remember, just because you have a unique gift of sensitivity to energy and emotions does not mean you have to live a stressful life. You just have to know how to manage your own energy first. I hope you can use some of the ideas from this book to help you enjoy your journey as a sensitive person.
